POWERtalk Pollokshields — Dance

Wednesday 19th February. 2020  in Hutchesons' Grammar School - Room A21.

 The evening was opened by President Brendan who gave apologies from three members and introduced 
 Roz who was the chairman for the evening.   Roz gave an inspiration and topics were given to Grace, Liz, Louise, Brendan and Regina.   Brendan handed out a quiz about Dance which caused much discussion and laughter.   Following the Tea interval two speeches were given   
 One by Grace on a Hungarian Dance she did at school and
 Lauren on the importance of dance lessons for the young.
 Regina evaluated the speech by Grace and Louise the speech by Lauren.

A short business meeting was then held to discuss the Caledonia Council Speech Contest and to make arrangements for the Club Speech Contest at the next meeting.
The General Evaluation was given by Ruth and the Vote of Thanks and Timing was by Liz.

A very happy and informative evening was had by all.

The next meeting is on 4th March in Hutchesons' Grammar School - room A21 and is the Club Speech Contest to which all are welcome.

POWERtalk Pollokshields — Fashion

5th February 2020

The evening was opened by President Brendan who introduced the Theme "Fashion" with a recording of the Kinks "Dedicated follower of Fashion" and had everyone singing.


Everyone was made welcome to the first meeting of 2020.  Unfortunately, there were a number of apologies which meant that various members had two assignments.

who gave us an interesting Inspiration and gave out Topics such as Liz on Burns (not a fan), Roz on fashion who gave us a quote from an Editor of Vogue "Fashion can be bought, but Style you must possess), Regina on a quote from Marilyn Munroe on the right kind of shoes, Brendan on TV programme fashion - Pottery" and


 finally, Grace who was asked about fashion which caused dogs to be bred for fashion - she did not like the topic and cleverly talked about jewellery fashion.

The Education/ Fun item was by Regina
This took the form of a most entertaining Quiz covering many areas of fashion.   The winner was Brendan.
Following the tea break, the two speakers were introduced

 Roz who took us through the ages with fashion and gave us sensible advice at the end.
Carole who led us through a number of areas of life which was fashion-led and told us about a jumper which she has knitted which was on the catwalk during London Fashion Week.

The evaluations were by Grace and Brendan.

A short Business Meeting then took place and items discussed were the Council and Club Speech Contest and club dues.

The Timing was by Carole and the General Evaluation and Vote of Thanks was by Liz.

A most enjoyable evening was had by all.

Date of the next meeting:   19th February 2020 in Hutchesons' Grammar School and the Theme will be Dance.

POWERtalk Pollokshields — A Heilan' Fling






Wednesday 27th November, 2019


The evening was opened by President Brendan who amused us all with tales of his highland dancing when very young.





Brendan then introduced us to the Chairman for the evening





Scilla who handed out topics to Louise on the furthest North she had been.
Regina, Liz and finally Brendan.

We were then led through a session by Brendan on Happy Memories through the decades.




Following the tea break Ruth gave us a very interesting and historical speech on Tam O' Shanter and Glengarry hats which was evaluated by Grace




Iris was the second speaker and her topic was on Whisky Cocktails with a very amusing tale of the origins of the term Cocktail. Iris's speech was evaluated by Anita.

A short business meeting followed to discuss some Region Business and also the Division of Labour for the Christmas Party next week.

The timings were by Liz and Regina gave an excellent Evaluation of the evening.


The next meeting of POWERtalk Pollokshields is the Christmas party which is to be held in the home of the President.   There will be a short break thereafter until February.

POWERtalk Pollokshields – In or Out.

Wednesday 30th October, 2019 at 7.30 in Hutchesons' Grammar School - room A21.

Theme for the Evening "In or Out"


President Brendan opened the meeting and welcomed everyone.  There were no apologies.
Regina was introduced as Chairman for the evening.   Regina gave us an interesting Passing Thought and then presented topics to 
Anita                                                                             Ruth, Liz


Roz and Carole - both of whom had decided to dress up for Halloween.

Regina then presented a very interesting and challenging workshop of how to improve your memory.

Following the tea interval we had two speeches 



Iris who gave us an animated speech on career choices.

Scilla who gave us a very interesting and well researched  speech on the origins of sewing.
Both speeches were quite different and original takes on the Theme.

Evaluations were given by Roz and Liz.

A short Business meeting took place with the Christmas Party being discussed and a Report on the Caledonia Council Meeting.

Iris gave us the timings.
The General evaluation was by Louise who agreed that we had had a most enjoyable evening.

The next meeting will be on 13th November 2019 in Hutchesons' Grammar School - room A21 at 7.30pm.

The Theme of the evening will be "Great Expectations".

POWERtalk Pollokshields – Home Sweet Home



Meeting on Wednesday 16th October, 2019 in the home of a member.

Theme:   Home Sweet Home"



  Due to the School Holidays we met at the home of a member.  The meeting was opened by Brendan.    Unfortunately due to a number of different reasons there were four apologies for the evening.

Brendan was also the Chairman for the evening and Topics were given out to Roz, on taste in books,
Iris on homeless, Regina on Furniture and Liz on a Happy Childhood.

The Education session was also given by Brendan.   He passed out a number of prints of paintings  and all the members had fun trying to remember details of the paintings.   This was a most enjoyable session on observation.

Timings were given by Scilla which was followed by the Tea Interval.


First on the agenda for the second half was a speech by Regina.  This was a very entertaining and educational speech on dwellings through the ages including information about some radical new ideas.

Carole gave a very fulsome evaluation of Regina's Speech.
This was followed by a short business meeting.
Roz gave an excellent General Evaluation and Vote of Thanks.
Although we were small on numbers it was an excellent evening.

POWERtalk Pollokshields - Send in the Clowns

POWERtalk Pollokshields met on Wednesday 2nd October, 2019 in Hutchesons' Grammar School, room A21.

The theme for the evening was Send in the Clowns.

The President Brendan welcomed the members and one visitor and gave the apologies.

Roz was introduced as Chair for the evening.   Roz gave an Inspiration from Cole Porter's Be a Clown and then gave out topics which were given by Brendan, Carole, Liz, Ruth and Grace all connected to the Theme.

The Education Session was given by Regina in the form of a quiz about Glasgow.    This was full of very interesting facts and was very educational due to the fact that the scores were very low.   Everyone learnt quite a lot about Glasgow.

Following the tea interval speeches were given by Ruth and Liz - both keeping to the Theme, but with very different approaches to the subject.

The evaluations were given by Grace and Brendan.

Brendan conducted a short Business Meeting in which finances were discussed and Liz mentioned the forthcoming Council Meeting.

The timing was by Regina and the General Evaluation and Vote of Thanks was given by Carole.

A most enjoyable evening was had by all.

The next meeting will be held on 16th October in the home of a member due to the fact that ths School will be closed for the October holiday.

POWERtalk Pollokshields - Autumn Fruits

The evening was opened by Scilla, President for 2018-19 as the final meeting of the last session was not quorate.    The Business Meeting and AGM were held and the new officers for 2019-10 were duly voted in.

The Board was installed by Roz, with Brendan as President, Liz as Vice President, Regina as Secretary and Roz as Treasurer.

Brendan handed out Topics on the Theme of the evening "Autumn Fruits"with topics going to Scilla, Roz, Carole, Louise and Liz.
The installation was followed by a most entertaining session on Word Power by Roz.


Following the Tea break we had a very entertaining Speech which was evaluated by Scilla.

The timing was by Liz 


The General Evaluation was by Louise.

The next meeting will be on 2nd October and the Theme will be "Send in the Clowns".

The Rovers Club Training Weekend

Rovers Club are having their annual training weekend, as usual, in Carlisle. This morning the Business Meeting was held followed by the club speech contest.

In the evening we had a meal at the Crown and Mitre. A little surprise was that a former member of ITC had provided a little reminder of the past.

POWERtalk Pollokshields – Transformations

 POWERtalk Pollokshields Club Meeting held in Hutchesons' Grammar school Room A21 on  15th May 2019.

The theme for the evening:  Transformations.



 President Scilla opened the meeting a welcomed the members.  She introduced Louise who was the Chairman for the evening.
 Following an interesting Inspiration, Louise handed out Topics.
The first topic went to President Scilla on Favourite stories involving a change
 The second topic went to Ruth on Makeovers.
 Carole took the next topic on Windfarms (dressed  up suitably for her visit to the Eurovision Song Contest)
 Brendan's topic was on a favourite toy as a child
 Lauren was asked about transformations in animals.
 Roz gave us all an education session involving words using a word wheel and guessing the correct meaning of various words.

Following the tea break we had speeches from Liz "Thanks Tim" and
Grace on Transformations - Myth, Fact or Fantasy?

There were various items of business which were discussed in the Business Meeting.

Regina gave us the timing on the evening.

A full General Evaluation was given by Ruth

Regina gave us the Closing Thought and Vote of Thanks.

POWERtalk Pollokshields

17th April, 2019
A Night at the Movies.
in Hutchesons' Grammar School, Glasgow.

 The meeting was opened by President Scilla who introduced
 Grace as Chairman for the evening.    Topics were handed out  including asking if going to the movies was a regular event  or a special occasion? How much has going to the cinema influenced you? What is your preferred genre of film? Did you ever want to go into the film industry?
What heartthrobs did you have from the movies?

The  Intermission kept to the theme of the evening and popcorn was served in addition to the usual tea, coffee and cake.

During the Second half of  the evening  club members gave a short review of various films. First was Liz with "Mama Mia … here we go again"
 Brendan chose - "Seven Samarai"
 Lauren "Joy"
 Regina on "Caberet"
 Louise chose "Mandy"
 For Roz it was "Some Like it Hot"
 Carol chose the classic "Charade"
Finally Ruth - "Twelve Years a Slave"

Grace, as Chairman also gave us a short review of "Bambi"

The General Evaluation was by Brendan and Closing Thought and VOT was by Roz.

A very interesting evening with so many different types of films being discussed and  which everyone enjoyed.

The Next meeting is on Wednesday 1st May, 2019 with the Theme:  New Beginnings.

Visitors are very welcome.

Pollokshields Club

Pollokshields Club met on  20th March, 2019 in the home of a member.

The Theme of the evening was  "Spring is Busting out all Over".
 Our president Scilla welcomed members to the meeting and gave apologies from Anita and Ruth.
 Grace was introduced as Chairman for the evening.   Grace's Passing Thought was from Chaucer.   Topics were given out 
 Louise on Spring in the Garden
 Carole on Spring Pilgrimage to the Eurovision Song Contest
 Regina on the Dawn Chorus and finally
Liz on Seasons.

This was followed by an interesting and fun Education session by Brendan when he asked members to tell us who we would like to invite to dinner - among those we wanted were Sidney Poitier  Elvis 2 people wanted him, J.K. Rowling, Calum MacFarlan Barow, Dustin Hoffman and Stuart MacBride.

Following the Interval came the speeches
 Lauren about Spring Fashion
 Iris on the joys of thinking about Spring cleaning.

Following the speeches there was a short business meeting.

The meeting concluded at 9.30.

The next meeting is on 17th April in Hutchesons' Grammar School and the Theme is "A Night at the Movies"
Guests are always welcome.

POWERtalk Pollokshields 6th March, 2019.

Theme:   Mad as a March Hare.

Pollokshields were delighted to welcome two new members Regina and Lauren.

 The President opened the meeting and introduced the Chair for the evening - Brendan.
Various topics were given by Lauren, Grace, Louise and Roz with March and Spring as the Theme.

 An excellent Education Session was given by Louise on the correct way to run a meeting.   A good reminder to us all.


 Following the tea interval Regina gave her "Icebreaker" speech which was both entertaining and informative - well done!
The second speech was by our President, Scilla.   Scilla's speech on March Hares was fascinating as usual and included a large amount of information..

The President then ran a short Business Meeting to deal with the Club's Constitution and the meeting of 17th April.

The General evaluation was by Liz and the VOT and closing thought was by Carole.
This was a warm and friendly meeting with a surprising number of approaches to the theme.

Date of next meeting:   20th March, 2019.
Due to the fact that the school is closed that day this meeting will be held in the home of a member.

Pollokshields Club

On 6th February Pollokshields Club met for the first time in 2019.    The Theme for the evening was "Fungi"

Members were welcomed by President Scilla who welcomed Regina as a new member - a good start to the year.

The Chairman, Liz was introduced and after giving an inspiration "All mushrooms are edible, but some only once" which is a Croatian Proverb.she led the topics including Scillla on "Life is too short to stuff a mushroom", Carole on the difficulty of going out to dinner as a vegetarian, Grace foraging for mushrooms in Italy and Regina on the difficulties of love in ancient Rome.

Tis was followed by a very lively "fun" session based on 20 Questions.   The winner was Carole.
Following the tea interval there were two speeches 
 Roz - Title "Fungi by any other name" and
 Iris - title "Our little fungi friends"

Both speeches were both entertaining and educational.   Who would have guessed that there was so much to say about fungi?
Our General Evaluation was by Grace and the evening concluded with Louise, the timekeeper giving the timings, closing thought  and the Vote of Thanks

Our next meeting is to be on 20th February in room A8.  This is to be our Speech Contest.  A number of people have indicated that they will be joining us and, as usual, visitors will be made very welcome.

After a longer than usual break for Christmas, Pollokshields Club is meeting on Wednesday 6th February, 2019 in Hutchesons' Grammar School, Room A21.

The Theme of the evening is "Funghi" and all will be made welcome.

POWERtalk Pollokshields

5th December, 2018 at 7.30pm. in Hutchesons' Grammar school - Room A20.

Theme:  Under the Weather.

The meeting was opened by President Scilla who gave apologies from Carole and Ruth.  Grace was introduced as Chair for the evening.

Interesting topics were handed out all based on the Theme for the evening.

 Louise on advantages of being under the weather - she could not see any.
Liz and the Science of the Weather.
 Regina and Looking Under the Weather
 Roz on reacting to superstitions such as St Swithin's Day.
 Iris gave a very lively and useful education session on beginnings and endings of speeches.  Everyone contributed and this was a very lively session.

Following the tea interval there were speeches
 Lauren made her first speech entitled "Under the Weather"

Anita made her first speech this session as she has been in Bordeaux the title was "Distant Skies"

Evaluations were by Scilla and Roz.

This was followed by a short business meeting.   Brendan presented the Budget on behalf of Carole.
The Christmas Party was discussed with members volunteering contributions.
General Evaluation was by Liz, the Timing, Closing Thought and Vote of Thanks was by Louise.

This was a very entertaining and happy meeting.    

The Party will be held next week in the home of a member.

The club meetings will recommence on 6th February 2019.   Anyone who has any comments of requires any information can make a comment on this blog and it will be answered.

President Scilla opened the evening and gave a special welcome to all the guests - Frances, Regina, Lauren, Barbara and Carole.
Apologies were given by Ruth, Iris, Carole and Anita.


Louise was introduced as Chair for the Evening.

Topics were given by Scilla, Lauren, Roz, Brendan, 
Frances and Grace.

The Theme of the evening was "Book Reviews" and Reviews were given by


Lauren on "Got You Back" by Jane Fallon.
Roz on "Elevation" by Stephen King

Louise on "The Puppet Boy of Warsaw" by Evan Weaver.

Brendan on "Beside the Ocean of Time" by George McKay Brown.

Grace on "Appetite and Greed" by Phillip Kazan.

Liz on "Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine" by Gail Honeyman and "I'll Keep you Safe" by Peter May.
Regina on "Runnaway" by Alice Munro

And finally Scilla on "This is Going To Hurt" by Adam Kay.

The Proposed Interclub was discussed and the Timing was by Brendan.

The General Evaluation was by Brendan.

The Closing Thought and Vote of Thanks was by Grace.

The Next Meeting is on 5th December 2018 in Hutchesons' Grammar school and the Theme is to be "Under the Weather."

POWERtalk POLLOKSHIELDS CLUB.


POWERtalk Pollokshields met on 7th November 2018 in Room A22 Hutchesons' Grammar School.  Members were welcomed by President Scilla who also welcomed two guests.

Chairman for the evening was Carole who also handed out Topics to members

Brendan's topic was about Christmas Preparations.

An excellent workshop was presented by Ruth on "How to say NO".   Everyone present participated in this .

Following the tea break members were entertained by Scilla and Roz giving speeches - Scilla speech was entitled "Processing Memories" and Roz's speech "In Flanders Fields".
The mini evaluations were given by Iris and Brendan.

A short Business Meeting followed the speeches when dates and Themes for the next session were discussed.

The General Evaluation was by Liz.

Timekeeper Grace gave the Closing Thought and Vote of Thanks.

The next meeting of POWERtalk Pollokshields will be on 21st November 2018 in Room A22 Hutchesons' Grammar School and the Theme will be "Book Reviews" with All Club Participation.

POWERtalk Pollokshields.

POWERtalk Pollokshields met on 17th October in the home of a member due to the fact that the School is closed for the Autumn Holidays.
Theme:   Autumn Leaves a lot to be Desired.


The members were welcomed by President Scilla.
Special welcome to visitor Frances.

Roz was chairman for the evening and gave us the Inspiration and Topics.
Topics were given by Liz, Louise, Grace and Brendan.


Brendan gave us an interesting Education on some of the pictures of Vincent Van Gough with some insights into the background of three pictures.

Following supper Iris gave us an educational speech about Autumn with a great deal of information about trees, leaves and even railways.
The final speaker for the evening was Ruth who gave us an amusing but useful speech about having an exit strategy. 
Timekeeping was by Liz.

The evening was brought to a close with a General Evaluation by Scilla and the closing thought and Vote of Thanks was by Liz.

POWERtalk Pollokshields

POWERtalk Pollokshields met on 3rd October.

President Scilla opened the meeting and welcomed the members and a guest Frances.   Apologies were given from Anita, Brendan and Roz.
The Chairman, Liz, was introduced The Theme of the evening was "A Life on the Ocean Wave".  This was a Lifeboat Competition in which the members had to take on a character and give reasons why they should be saved as the ship was going down.    All the characters were composers and were …

After the first round members voted who should be saved.  Following the Tea interval was the second round.  
Composers who were saved for the second round were - Sir Karl Jenkins, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and George Gershwin.


The worthy winner of the last place was George Gershwin.

The Chairman, Liz then led a short topic session.   Topics were given by Louise,  Ruth, Iris, Carole and Grace.

Timing was by Scilla.  The General evaluation was by Grace and the Closing Thought was by Scilla.

Everyone enjoyed an interesting evening.

Next Meeting:  17th October, 2018.   Theme:  Autumn leaves a lot to be Desired.  As the school will be closed for the Autumn holidays this is to be at the home of a member.

POWERtalk Pollokshields.

POWERtalk Pollokshields met on Wednesday 19th September 2018 in Hutchesons’ Grammar School.   This is a new venue and seems to be working well.

The Theme for the evening was “The Good Old Days”

The meeting 
was opened by our President, scilla who welcomed three guests, Ayliffe, Barbara and Doreen.
The Chairman for the evening was Iris, who gave the Inspiration and also handed our the topics.
Various members accepted topics on the theme of the evening including Louise.

This was followed by an interesting education session by Grace.
Following the tea interval, a speech was given by Carole and our President Scilla read us a chapter of her book "For my Grandchildren's Grandchildren".
This was followed by a brief Business meeting to discuss various letters.
The timing was by Roz, the General Evaluation by Liz and Roz gave an entertaining closing thought and Vote of Thanks.
It was the general feeling of the meeting that “The Good Old Days” were not so good as nowadays.
